Spanish Numbers 1-100

Get Students Talking

I’m always looking for ways to bring football into Spanish class. Not fútbol, but fútbol americano! As a girl raised in the South, football was a part of life. Fall weekends revolved around games, and that love never really went away. So when it comes time to teach Spanish numbers 1–100, my game plan is football.

You know those classes that are so quiet? I mean, you cannot get them to talk. I'm standing there talking, asking questions, waiting—only to realize I'm having a conversation with myself. That was me, trying to get an early-morning middle school class to engage.

Our usual warm-up topics—the date, the weather—weren’t cutting it. Meanwhile, it was football season. Students were walking in wearing jerseys, talking about games, buzzing with energy before the bell. I love talking about football with students before or after class ~ but during class?

Students know if they want to get me off-task, all they have to do is ask, “Did you go to the game on Saturday?” And I can talk football. But during class, I’d stop myself. Stay in the TL. Focus on the objective. Football isn’t in the curriculum. You should be teaching fútbol.

And yet…I needed to get these kids talking—about anything. That’s when it hit me: why not use what they already care about to teach what they need to learn?

So I pull up ESPN Deportes and ask questions about Saturday's game.

That’s what wakes them up. Students who rarely participate suddenly start speaking— in Spanish. It’s something new. Something familiar. Something they already love. They talk about football all the time outside of class, so why not bring football into Spanish class? Light bulb moment. We review numbers using college football scores. Same objective. Way more engagement.

Learn Numbers 1-100

Football season is the perfect time to talk numbers. Each year, I create Spanish numbers 1–100 worksheets using jersey numbers from local college teams and N F L teams to get students excited about learning numbers. What started as a fun experiment turned into something my classes genuinely looked forward to. They’ve been such a hit that I keep making them—because combining my love of football and Spanish just works.

Want to generate that same excitement in your classroom? Try talking about football in Spanish. And don’t worry—you don’t need to know anything about football to talk about the scores.

So… are you ready for some football? It’s time to talk about the top two teams in the

N F L. This year, it’s the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks. My pick? I’m cheering for the Patriots.

The Super Bowl is always a hot topic—especially in the days leading up to kickoff. It’s the perfect excuse to get students talking about their favorite teams and players, and making game-day predictions. ¿Quién va a ganar?

Team Rosters

My favorite way to practice Spanish numbers is by using team rosters. I pull up a roster for each team, project it on the board, and start asking questions like ¿Quién lleva el número diecinueve? or ¿Qué número es Drake Maye? And let me tell you—the boys in the room light up. The competition to answer first is intense.

Students love showing off what they know about football, and the girls get into it, too. That’s what I love most about this activity: everyone is engaged, learning, and having fun.

Jersey Numbers

As a written activity, students choose their favorite of two teams and use a roster to write the jersey numbers of popular players. This part takes some prep on my end. So, I do my football homework! I look over the team rosters and depth charts, figure out which players students care about, and create a worksheet. (Definitely not your average worksheet.)

And it’s worth it. Students beg for this activity. They get meaningful practice writing numbers 1–100, and they don’t even realize how much they’re learning. For me, it's worth the work because students love it. To make things easier for you, I’ve updated it for Super Bowl 2026—to save you some time!

Team rosters are packed with information! (See links below.) There are so many interesting things to talk about. You can review descriptive adjectives and comparatives while talking about height. ¿Quién es más alto? ¿Nick Emmanwori o Jaxon Smith-Njigba?

Compare ages. ¿Quién es mayor? ¿Cooper Kupp o Sam Darnold? Practice tener with ¿Cuántos años tiene Stephon Diggs? Students engage.

NFL Scoreboard

The Monday following the big game, the topic is still hot. I project the final score on the board and ask, "¿Cuántos puntos tienen?" and "¿Cuál es tu equipo favorito?" During the regular season, I pull up scores from other teams around the nation. This is a regular Monday warm-up each fall (especially with college football!) If I forget to bring it up, students remind me.

There are so many variations you can do with these activities. When football season ends, switch to basketball to practice numbers over 100. Talk about the teams from your school, community, or town. This communicates that you're interested and paying attention to what matters to them. The goal is to find what interests your students and make a way to talk about it in Spanish.

What I love most about these activities is that they're a great way to connect with students. It's fun to find things we have in common (favorite teams, players, or sports) and have something to talk about - that is interesting to them. Topics like these build relationships. As my favorite coach says, "Football unifies. In a world that is very divided, nothing brings people together like football." -Dabo Swinney

There should be a lot to talk about after all of the commercials and the halftime show! Be sure to check out ESPN Deportes for authentic resources. I hope you enjoy these ideas and have fun implementing them in your classroom! I'd love to see how these activities work for you.
