One of my most popular Spanish I Spy activities is I Spy Cognates, and it’s perfect for the beginning of the school year.
Students search for 32 Spanish cognates—one for every letter of the alphabet! As they find each picture, they check it off their list and make connections between English and Spanish.
It’s a great first-day Spanish activity because students quickly discover that they already know more Spanish than they realize. That little boost of confidence can make a big difference, especially for beginning Spanish students.
The activity includes two differentiated checklists with 16 items on each page. Students can use the basic checklist or a version that asks them to check and translate the cognates.
